VAE Eisenbahnsysteme (part of voestalpine) and Energie Zotter Bau GmbH & Co KG invited at lovely summer weather to the opening of one of the most modern small hydro power plants in Styria, Austria – the power plant KW PENZ in Zeltweg.

Many guests from economy, politics as well as abutting owner enjoyed the excellent organised party at the factory premises of VOEST in Zeltweg.

GLOBAL HYDRO ENERGY has been assigned with the construction, fabrication and commissioning of two identical vertical Kaplan spiral turbines with a nominal power output of 1450 kW each, 2900 kW in total.

The power plant is situated at the river Pöls run by VAEE together with Energie Zotter and Mr. Rochus Penz.

Operating target was to implement clean energy for sustainable development directly at the location to cover the whole energy demand needed for production.

Starting point was the wish of VAEE to use power instead of gas for the forming process of the railroad tracks. The feasibility study showed that only a power plant at the site would fit economic viability targets.

After the successful implementation VAEE can proof a positive energy balance; which means the company is producing more electricity than it is using. The self sufficient power supply and cost development in the long run is secured.

Surplus power production is fed into the grid. The yearly produced power equals approximately the supply of 3500 households.

During the implementation of the plant attention has been put on the environmentally friendly arrangement of the course of the river. Many ascending aids have been applied to create different flow speeds within the river.

Thanks to the new power plant workplaces at VAEE are saved because of the beneficial production of their own power.
